This page is dedicated to the memory of ELIZA EMERLINE BUCKNER, my great grand-mother on my mother's side. From information supplied by Terri j Seith (terrijs@juno.com) and from, Judy Elizabeth Smith (jsr2658@aol.com), it appears that the documented lineage is as follows: John or Lester Buckner Annie Pope ------------------------- ----------------------- b b m d d WILLIAM MEREDITH BUCKNER NANCY (Stacy) HATHORN ------------------------- ----------------------- b 1803 in Georgia b 1808 in Georgia m 1826 in Monroe Cty, Ga d d (The death cert for Adelaine shows her mother's name to be Stacy Buckner) Meridith is supposed to have been in Marion County, Ga in the 1830, 1840 and 1850 censuses. Note that one of her children has "Meridith" as a middle name. We have obtained a copy of a marriage license issued in Monroe County, Ga on October 8, 1826 for the marriage of Meredith Buckner to Nancy S Hathorn. The marriage is recorded in Marriage Record Book no A, Page 50-A. Both were born in Georgia. The best information that I have on the Buckner family is from a query that was in Ancestor Hunting, 1969, P 143 at 976.3 W-335. Excerpts from that query are as follows: John L Avery, 157 Albany Ave., Shreveport, La submitted the query. One of the sons of Wm Avery and his wife was Waters Leonard Avery, born 1852, who married Adeline Matilda Buckner on Nov 13, 1873, in Claiborne Parish, La...Avery's mother, Adeline Matilda (Buckner) Avery born in 1848, was orphaned and lived with a Mrs Traylor who had an adopted son Pleas in Claiborne Parish. A [younger] sister (Eliza Emeriline Buckner) married Alonzo Dow Avery, born in Ga...Adeline was the daughter of William Meredith Buckner, died in Claiborne Parish or killed in Battle of Vickburg.... The death certificate of Adeline Buckner Avery states that her father was Meridith Buckner, born in Ga and mother is Stacy Hawthorn born in Ga and that Adeline was born in Ga. I have checked the records for the deaths at the battle of Vicksburg and the only Buckner found was a Wm T Buckner, b 1838. It is the wrong name and the date of birth would be wrong. I have also checked census records for his name and for that of Mrs Traylor and could not find any hits. I also wrote a letter in 1997 to all the Averys listed as living in Shreveport but got no responses from the mailing. In Feb, 2001, I received some information from Terri Seith of Houston, terrijs@juno.com, that gives a lot of detailed information about the Buckner family, as follows: Meredith Buckner b 1803 m Nancy Hathorn in 1826, b 1808, Ga There children were: 1 Chaarles R Buckern, b abt 1824, Ga 2 Susan Louisiana Buckern, b before 1830, Ga 3 John Wesley Buckner, b 1830, Ga m Nancy B Henry 12-23-1852 in Union Cty, Ark 2nd wife, Elisabeth Brittain Henry, b 1837, Al m after 1858, died 1916 in Joaquin, Texas 4 Mary Buckner b 1832, Ga 5 Ebba Buckner, b 1834, Ga 6 William Buckner b 1838, Ga 7 Sarah Buckner, b 1843, Ga 8 Nancy Buckner b 1844, Ga 9 Adeline Matailda Buckner b 1848, Ga m Waters Leonard Avery, b 5-5-1852, d 2-4-1926 10 Eliza Emerline Buckner, b 6-9-1851 in La, d 10-29-1908 m Alvey Lorenzo Dow Avery, b 3-10-1848 Talbot Cty, Ga d 2-5-1932, Jonesboro, La Terri Seith notes that Meridith was in Marion Co, Ga in 1830, 1840 and 1850 which would explain why only Eliza was born in Louisiana. I have also found the following marriages in the Claiborne Parish area but have not traced them out yet, except for the first one which is my line: L D Avery m Eliza Buckner Sep 29, 1870 book 01, p317 W G Avery m A W Buckner Nov 13, 1873 book 02, p 372 W. I don't know if there is in relationship or not. There are 9 children listed above. William Sirus was born in 1871 and had already left home at the time of the above census. Thus, there was one other living child that had also left home. Although I have not yet found any ties from it, I am a member of the Buckner Newsletter, c/o Betty Ann Smiddy-Buckner, 8857 Revere Run, West Chester, OH 45069-3626 (103107.3363@CompuServe.COM) Another reference is to the Buckner page at http://enws347.eas.asu.edu/~buckner/buckner.html a good source for the above information was Terri J Seith (terrijs@juno.com)
