John Odom (b. 1802 Burke Co, Ga d 1836 Lauderdale, Ms) must have married
Mary Copeland about 1927 and he died in the mid 1930's. The children
born of this union were:
John E Odom b 1828 Ms moved to Johnson City,Tx
Mary M Odom b 1831 Ms
------>> Wm Auston Odom b 10-4-1832 Ms moved to Lincoln Par, La
Eleanor Odom b 1834
Elizabeth Odom b 1835
For the descendants of Wm Auston Odom, see the separate Odom page.
Story has it that John Odom was in bed with measles, but got out of
bed to take corn fodder in a shower of rain and the effects of the
exposure killed him.
After John's death, Mary married Trippe Pope (b 1805 GA) on Dec 25, 1844
and had several children named Pope. It is said that Mary Copeland had
a brother named Rip who had fought in the Civil War but I have not yet
verified that data. In the Roster of Confederate Soldiers 1861-1865
Vol IV, I found a reference to :
"Copeland, Ripley, Ms 8th Inf Co C.
Ripley Copeland, Private Co C, 8th Regt,
Miss, while serving in Jackson's Brigade,
Army of Tennessee, appears on a list of
killed or wounded in the 8th Miss Regt in
the battle of Murfreesboro, Tn between
Dec 30, 1862 and Jan 3, 1863."
A remark states that he was "Wounded slightly in the
hand." The company muster rolls for periods in 1861, 1862, 1863 and
1864 showed the location to be at Enterprise, Ms.
Census records reveal the following data:

Since the above census shows children that were apparently born prior to
the marriage of Mary and Trippe, they were either born to them prior to
their marriage or they were by a prior marriage of Trippe Pope.

John Odom appears in the Lauderdale County Ms Tax rolls for
the years 1835 and 1836. There was no roll for him for 1837
and he does not appear in any roll after that date.
I want to thank Randall Buchanan, P O Box 601, Foxworth, Ms
39483, ph 601-736-1827 (Nov 21, 1991) for much of the above data.
