This page is dedicated to Nancy Jeter Hardy GAITHER, the mother of Whitmill
H Hardy. I have an interest in the family of Whitmill H and Julia Hardy who
lived in Clay County, Ala from about 1850 to the late 1880's. My interest
is that their daughter, Nancy Hardy, married Thomas Florence Owen which
has turned out to be my ggf and ggm.

Nancy Jeter's first marriage was to Jesse Hardy. Their children were Whitmill
and Dicey. Jesse was 52 years older than Nancy when they married and he died
within a few years of their marriage. After his death, Nancy married Shadrack
Gaither and they had some children of their own. Jesse and Nancy's data is as
follows:

JESSE HARDY NANCY JETER
------------------ --------------------
b 1744 Bertie Co NC b 29 Feb 1796
m 1920 GA
d 1826 in Lincoln County Ga d 24 March 1881, Clay Cty Ala

Nancy is buried next to Whitmill Hardy at Lineville, Clay Cty, Ala.

After Jesse Hardy's death, Nancy Jeter Hardy married Shadrack Gaither. The
background on Shadrack and the descendant data of Shadrack and Nancy is as
follows:

VACHEL GAITHER DIANNAH (DINAH) HYATT

Francis Jane Gaither	b c.1836 Campbell Cty, Ga
Henry Haines Gaither	b Feb 1838 Campbell Cty, Ga
Married Effie Hardy, lived in Cass Co, Tx

Shadrack was previously married to Lucy Jeter and they had the following
children:
			James E Gaither
			Sarah Gaither
Unknown female Gaither mared John Mathews

In the actual marriage license of Shadrack and Nancy, she is listed as being
Nancy Willingham. However, I believe this is an error of the scribe who
wrote out the license. The bride immediately before their marriage was a
Willingham and the JP who performed the service was a Willingham. Since I
have been able to trace Nancy through each subsequent census and have tied
her into the children that she and Shadrack had and on to her cemetery plot
naming her as Nancy Gaither, I don't think there is any doubt that the entry
of "Willingham" was erroneous.

In addition to the above error of the name, there may have been an error in
the date of the marriage stated to be in Sept 1826. The marriage record above
that one was in 1827 which may indicate that Nancy's marriage was after that
one. Also, Jesse Hardy did not die until 1827 which would not have left
a conflict for the remarriage. Jesse's will was dated January 1827. The
scribe who wrote the marriage license noted that he entered the data on
the 3rs of Sept 1828. It could be that his memory or his notes of what he
was to write had failed him resulting in the error in the name and date.

A probate file was opened in Talladega County, Ala for Shadrack Gaither
in Oct, 1858 naming his children as listed above. However, since the
1850 census, below, does not show him in the household, I assume that he
died in Randolph County prior to the 1850 census and there was a delay of
a number of years before his probate was opened.

The 1850 Census for Talledega Cty, Ala, page 421 shows

1860 Census for Randolph Cty, Ala, Rockdale, page 572 (soundex Gaither G360)

The 1870 Census for Randolph County, PO Copper Mine p 207 shows Nancy living

The 1870 census also shows Nancy's son, William Gaither, living close to them
and reported at page 220.

The 1880 Census for Clay County, Ala, pa 133 shows Nancy living with the
Hardy Family at Lineville as follows:

	Nancy 86 Mother	Native

Nancy Gaither is buried next to W H and J A L Hardy in the Old City Cemetery
Lineville, Ala. showing b of Feb 29, 1796 and death of March 24, 1881

Since my only interest in the Gaither line is because Nancy Jeter Hardy
married Shadrack after having children with Jesse Hardy, I will not present
further descendants in the Gaither line. However, I do have additional data
if anyone wants to review it.
