married ca 1794 Mary Russell b ca 1780. Places of residence were Burke
Co Ga, Washington Co Al, Wayne and Lauderdale Co ms prior to 1845 and
Cherokee Co Texas from 1845 until 1852. Both are said to have died in
Texas. He was alive for the 1850 census.
The 1830 census for Wayne County, Ms shows:
Malachi Odom males 10-20 1
20-40 1
40-60 1
females un 10 1
10-20 3
40-60 1
It would appear that some fo the children had left home by 1830 but that
one child had married, had a child and had moved back home.
Malachi and 2 of his sons, Randal and James, each sold land in Mississippi
on Feb 11, 1843. They later moved to Cherokee County, Texas arriving
about January, 1846 at the Mt Comfort Community. Randall and James appear
in the tax records in Cherokee County for 1846.

He was not very old when he died--having lived from 1802 to approx 1836.
He was in bed with measles, but got out of bed to take corn fodder in a
shower of rain and the effects of the exposure killed him. His wife,
Mary, is listed as a widow in the census records of 1840. Mary later
married Trippe Pope and continued to live in Lauderdale, Ms. (Lauderdale
marriage records Book A, page 39, 25 Dec 1844)
Mary Copeland had a brother named Rip Copeland who fought in the
Civil War.
The 1830 census for John Odom shows 1 male under age 10 (which would be
John E Odom). In the 1840 census, Mary is listed as a widow in Lauderdale
County, Ms p 047.

It is said that Wm Auston Odom worked as an overseer for P.O.Mason at
White Sulpher River from early 1860 to 1862, then he joined the 28th
Regiment, Company G. He later traded places with another soldier in
Company I. He arrived home from the Civil War on May 2, 1864.
It is said that his grave is located at the foot of the grave of Margret A.
McKenzie at the New Hope Church in Lincoln Parish. Her head stone says
born Oct 1, 1805, died Aug 5, 1877. This site is north of Choudrant.
However, there is no marker for his grave and I cannot verify that he
is there.
Mary Jane McKenzie was Scottish and Irish. She was
less than 16 years old when she married. It is said that she died
of pneumoniain 1916. I don't know where she is buried but the census
for 1900 ED 7 sheet 23 line 42 has her living with her son Charles J
in Catahoula Parish. She could be buried there.
William McKenzie (her father) was born on Aug 31, 1817 and died
Nov 7, 1905.
Casander Tullos (her mother) was born on Dec 6, 1820 and died
March 12, 1880. They are both buried at Pleasant Grove cemetery just
south of Choudrant, along with other family members. It is said
that Cassie Tullos came from England with an uncle when she was
9 years old.
The above data was prepared in the past by Fannie Roseanna Gray.

McKenzie FAMILY
Although the 1900 census may not be accurate, it shows slightly
different facts than above. In 1900, Mary was age 57 and living in
Catahoula Parish with her son, Charley Odom. It states that Mary
was born in Miss and that both of her parents were also born in Miss.
Further, John Thomas Odom was born in Oct, 1854, according to the 1900
census which indicates they married prior to 1858. However, the
census may be incorrect. Other data shows that he was born on
Oct 7, 1859. The 1900 census for Catahoula Parish shows the
following data:

The 1900 census for Catahoula Parish, Sheet 23, line 42, shows the following
data about Charley Odom, his mother Mary McKenzie and his brother, William
Odom, all living together.
Charley Odom Oct 1871 28
Mary (Mother) July 1842 57
William (Bro) May 1881
The 1910 census shows Mary J Odom, mother in law, living with the family
of Wm S Avery, age 66. Wm S Avery is my G-f and is further reflected below.
The detail report of this 1910 census entry is in the Avery page.
Maggie Odom, Auston and Mary Jane's 2nd child, is my grandmother.
