It included both of their marks "X" which indicated that they could not sign their own names. While visiting the library in Pike County, my daughter, Kim O Chance, ran across the follow paragraph about Wade Varnado: William (Wady Hampton) Varnado owned where J B Cutrer lives. He hung Vince Carter, put known on his neck, him up on horse, tied rope to limb and hit horse out from under him. Robbed travelers in Roncal station for 2 bits. Used ket or bucket with strip and rosin to scare women. Cut Jeff Amacker with knife. There are some loose papers of Betty Davis in the Pike County Lib that show that Wade H Varnado purchased one slave from the Estate of Daniel Cutrer, who died in 1843. That record should be in the St Helena Parish Courthouse succession records at File C-5.
