Samuel served in the Revolutionary War but as a Loyalist rather than as
a Patriot. A Loyalist is one who was loyal to the side of England and the
King. Samuel and his wife and 7 childred applied for passports through
the Creek Nation on March 18, 1911.

Nancy Ward also was married to William Pharoah Thompson who was a brother
of Jerimiah Thompson (who was married to Sarah Talley).
Passports were issued to Leonard and Moses Varnado in Jones County, Ga
on Oct 35, 1809 for them to travel to the Natchez Territory.

I found the marriage certificate for Wade and Dicey in EBR Parish. It
included both of their marks "X" which indicated that they could not
sign their own names.
While visiting the library in Pike County, my daughter, Kim O Chance, ran
across the follow paragraph about Wade Varnado:
William (Wady Hampton) Varnado owned where J B Cutrer lives.
He hung Vince Carter, put known on his neck, him up on horse,
tied rope to limb and hit horse out from under him. Robbed
travelers in Roncal station for 2 bits. Used ket or bucket
with strip and rosin to scare women. Cut Jeff Amacker with
knife.
There are some loose papers of Betty Davis in the Pike County Lib that show
that Wade H Varnado purchased one slave from the Estate of Daniel Cutrer,
who died in 1843. That record should be in the St Helena Parish Courthouse
succession records at File C-5.

Celia is buried about 2 miles norht of Kentwood on the east side of
Hwy 51. Turn onto a gravel road at a sign saying ?spoon Road. The cemetery
is located on the left of that road under an existing cattle barn. Buried
there are supposed to be Celia Varnado, her first husband, Marshall J
Thompson and her second husband, William Ricks.
