This page is dedicated to my gg g-m, Nancy Weldon Owen b 1822 d 1895. THOMAS OWEN NANCY WELDON -------------------- ------------------ b Nov 19, 1809 b Oct 18, 1822 m Nov 29, 1840 Pike Cty, Ga d 1876 d June 27, 1895 See the OWEN page for more details on their descendants. As for the Weldons, I know very little and that small amount is listed here. The census records consistently listed Nancy's birthplace as being Ga. The 1880 census showed her father's birthplace as UNK but her mother as SC. The first time that I found Nancy was when she married Thomas in Nov 1840 in Pike County, Ga. Although I have not been able to trace and verify them to my line, other marriages in Pike County occurred within a few years prior to Nancy's marriage in 1840 which indicate a possible connection. -- July 1824 Weldon, Absolem to Nancy Hilton 24 Apr 1836 Amanda Weldon to William Hartsfield 28 Dec 1836 Bethany Weldon to Thos Hancock 27 Dec 1836 Wm R Weldon to Sarah Partec 27 27 Jul 1843 Henry S Urguhart to Amanda M Weldon The 1850 census also showed a Paty Weldon age 35 with a 6 years old child named Nancy and another child named Burthenia age 2. The names of Nancy, Bethany (Bithania, Burthenia) and Amanda all show up in Nancy's names of children. I checked the 1840 census for Ga but could not verify my Thomas Owen. However, there were two possibilities that I found. In both cases, there is an indication that Thomas had been previously married and had at least one child when he married Nancy in Nov 1840. The most likely possiblity is an entry in --- as below. This is a strong likelyhood since his wife would have already been deceased. Thomas Owen 1 age 20-30 1 age --- The other entry was in Meriwether County but that Thomas still had a wife and 2 children living with him as follows: Thomas Owen 1 fem: 2 1 ================================== DATA ON BETHANY WELDON HANCOCK ================================== I do not have proof that Bethany Weldon Hancock was the sister to my Nancy Weldon Owen but many factors indicate that they probably were sisters. In January, 1999, I had correspondence with Sharon Dixon (sharondixon@erols.com) who is descended from the Weldon line in Ga. She told the story of her GG GM Bethana Weldon who married Joseph Thomas or Thomas Jackson Hancock in Dec, 1936 when he was age 24 and she was age 14 (thus she must have been born in about 1822 and would be very close in age to my Nancy). Bethany was born on Jan 22, 1822 in Pike Cty, Ga and died June 23, 1879. Note that My Nancy Weldon Owen was born Oct 18, 1822 so it was exactly 9 months after Bethany was born. Saron stated that they joined the remaining Weldon family in Meriweather County just a short distance across the Flint River and they settled near the town of Baldwin. Their first child is named Mary and the second, Nancy--both names used in Nancy's family. Their first daughter, Mary Fkletcher Hancock, was born on Nov 6, 1838. Bethany ended up having 19 children with 3 sets of twins and one set of triplets. On Nov 3, 1839, Nancy Elender Hancock was born. Mary Elizabeth Hancock was born on Dec 19, 1840, William Henry Harrison Hancock on March 26, 1842, Mary Jane Hancock on June 15, 1847, Charles Wesley Hancock on June 2, 1842, Millyea Ann Hancock on June 15, 1847 and George Oliver "Doc" Hancock on June 15, 1849. In the summer 1850, with Bethany 4 months into her eighth pregnacy the familym moved to Skiletlick, Ala near the old Creek Indian Town of Great Oakfuskee and stayed there about 6 years. On Dec 15, 1850, John Jackson Hancock was born, on Oct 29, 1852 Sarah Josaphine "Jo" Hancock was born, Floyd Wesley Hancock was born in 1854, Amanda Martille "Mandy" Hancock (Sharon Dixon's G GM) was born on March 25, 1855. In 1855, their Amanda Hancock is born and that is Sharon Dixon's GGM. In 1856, the Hancocks moved to Carthage, Ms (Leake County) along with Bethana's father. They settled in the southern part of Leake Cty near the border of Scott Cty. Sharon believes that the Weldon's owned a plantation in Miss. However, I have not been able to identify a Weldon in the 1860 census that would agree with any names in Ga in 1840 or 1850. Thomas Lee Mackey "Tommy" Hancock was born on Jan 18, 1858, Bethany Harris Hancock on Nov 23, 1859, Robert Jefferson Davis "Dave" Hancock on Nov 19, 1861. (Their eldest son, Wm Henry Harrison Hancock is not with the family in the 1860 census. He may have died or been on his own. There was a William H Hancock in the Confederacy but it is not sure if this is the same) Tommie Hancock enlisted in the Confederacy on July 12, 1862. In the fall of 1863, Tommie did not return from a furlough to his unit and the Hancocks along with the families of McCartys, Klecks and Kelleys left Walnut Hills for Texas, traveling by night to prevent being detected. In 1864, the Hancocks left Miss and moved to "central Texas". Bethana Weldon Hancock is said to have died of grief over the loss of her son Tommy who had been born in 1858 in Ms. She is buried in the cemetery at Spainish Fort in Montague County, Texas. The Old Spanish Fort Cemetery in Montague County, Texas, includes the following cemeteries. Hancock, Jessey, son of JJ/LJ Aug 29, 1879 Sep 10, 1879 Hancock, Bethany (JJ/LJ) Nov 17, 1876 Nov 9, 1877 Hancock, Tommie J April 11, 1813 Aug 27, 1881 Hancock, Bethany Weldon, Wife of TJ Jan 18m 1822 Jun 23, 1879 Note--the two children listed above were the children of John Jackson Hancock and Justine McCarty Hancock, the son and dauther-in-law of Tommie and Bethany Hancock. ============================================= Sharon stated that Mr and Mrs Weldon freed their slaves and moved north to Ohio where he purchased land for his slaves to have. I have a copy of a photo of Bethany Weldon Hancock dated ca 1870, along with another photo that was identified to me to be her father and another of her mother but neither were named.
