New Form W-2 Reporting Requirement

Beginning with the calender year 2011 Form W-2s that will be issued in the Spring, 2012, employers will be required to expand the reporting requirements for the annual Form W-2 to include information related to group health insurance. Specifically, an employer must disclose the cost of providing group health insurance to the employee. However, the employer is not required to include information relating to flexible spending acocunts (FSA), Archer medical savings accounts (MSA) or Health Savings Accounts (HSA).

What does this mean for the employer--clearly, it means more work, more costs and more time required to gather and report the information. The only advantage is that it will first be required for 2011 and is not yet a requirement for 2010.
